Daylight Saving Time ended Sunday, November 1 at 2 AM. You gained an hour. You also lost the evening light.
For a lot of people, that trade feels lopsided by about Tuesday.
The clocks change twice a year and we’re still, somehow, collectively surprised every time. The mornings feel a little brighter for a week, and then the sun is setting at 5 PM and dinner feels like midnight. If November hits you sideways every year, you’re in good company. Here’s how to land on your feet.
Get Outside in the Morning
This is the single most effective thing you can do. Morning light, even 10 minutes of it, helps your body recalibrate faster than anything else. Step outside with your coffee. Walk the dog around the block. Stand on the porch. Your internal clock runs on light, and the morning is when it listens.
In Falls Church, the morning scene is pretty good right now. The leaves are still doing their thing. The air is crisp. It’s a solid time to be outside.
Hold Your Schedule
The extra hour is tempting to burn. Sleep in, stay up later, use the weekend as an excuse to drift. Don’t.
The adjustment is smoother when your body knows what to expect. Keep your bedtime where it was. Get up when you normally would. Your sleep quality the rest of the month will thank you.
Dim the Screens After Dark
Your phone, your TV, your laptop. All of them emit light that signals your brain to stay alert longer than you actually want to be. In fall, this gets worse because the evening feels longer than it is. You’re watching one more episode at 9 PM when your body thinks it’s midnight.
Dim the screens after 8. Or better yet, pick up a book. Your November self will be dramatically less tired.
Lean Into November
November gets a bad reputation and it doesn’t deserve it.
Yes, it gets dark at 5 PM. But also: candles exist. Soup season is real. The fireplace hasn’t been used in six months and it’s ready to go. There’s something to be said for slowing down a little. November is actually kind of nice if you let it be.
Put Something on the Calendar
This is the practical one. The early dark can feel like the day ended before you were ready. The fix is simple: give yourself something to look forward to in the evening.
A concert at The Barns at Wolf Trap. Dinner at a Falls Church spot you’ve been meaning to try. A neighborhood walk before the sun goes down. A new recipe on a Wednesday night. Small things work. The point is having something on the schedule so 5 PM doesn’t feel like the finish line.
Falls Church has a lot going on in November. Get out and be part of it.
One More Thing
If you’ve been waiting for a sign to reset something, November is a solid time to do it. New season. One extra hour in the bank. The holidays are close enough to feel real but far enough that you still have time.
